Transitioning out of the military is a significant life change for all service personnel, no matter the length of service or role. For many, this shift also involves beginning university, retraining, or entering the NHS full-time. The SIS Peer Mentorship Scheme was created to support service leavers, reservists, and veterans as they move into and navigate careers within healthcare.

What the Scheme Offers

Our scheme matches a peer supporter (mentor) with a peer supportee, ideally from the same profession. Where helpful, we also aim to match individuals working in the same region or Trust.

All peer supporters have ongoing access to advice and guidance from the SIS team through our dedicated inbox, ensuring they feel well-equipped and supported throughout the mentoring process.

Benefits for Peer Supporters (Mentors)

  • Develop mentoring skills – a valuable asset in any healthcare role, especially for those looking toward leadership or management positions.

  • Strengthen leadership capabilities through real-world support of colleagues.

  • Support and nurture the future workforce by guiding those at earlier stages of their healthcare journey.

  • Reflect on your own career experiences, helping shape the kind of support you may have once needed yourself.

  • Give back to your profession by helping fellow veterans and reservists thrive.

  • Receive a certificate of achievement recognising your contribution.

Benefits for Peer Supportees

  • Familiar camaraderie – connect with someone who shares military experience and understands the transition into healthcare.

  • Shared values and understanding, creating a safe and supportive space to discuss challenges and growth.

  • Guidance through the transition from service life to healthcare roles (where applicable).

  • Practical advice on topics such as workplace culture, managing work–life balance, study support, or navigating NHS systems.

  • Goal-setting support, including help developing SMART goals after completing the peer support agreement.

  • Regular, reliable contact with your supporter throughout the mentoring relationship.

  • Long-term support where needed, helping you settle confidently into your new role.
